Volkswagen has announced prices for an updated version of its Phaeton luxury car, with the top-of-the-range model costing just over £74,000.

Prices start at £37,995 for the short-wheelbase model fitted with a new 3.0-litre V6 common-rail diesel engine.

Despite the new engine being more powerful than the unit it replaces, the revised entry-level Phaeton is more than £4000 cheaper than the previous version.

The new diesel powers the car from 0-62mph in 8.4sec and on to a top speed of 146mph.

The 4.2-litre V8 model costs £56,042, while the top-of-the range 6.0-litre W12 costs £74,272 - £400 more than the current model.

A new shape to the bonnet, headlamps and rear lights differentiate the new model from the outgoing one, while the cabin has a new satellite-navigation system.

If you haven't already spent enough on your Phaeton, you can splash out a further £825 on a new integrated Bluetooth mobile phone system.

You can place an order for the face-lifted Phaeton now, with first deliveries expected in September.
