A new ranking system to help car buyers find the most environmentally friendly vehicles has been launched.
Created by the Department for Transport (DfT) in association with What Car?, the system allows buyers to select the type of car they want, its transmission and fuel type and then advises on the lowest carbon dioxide-emitting models available.

Transport Minister Jim Fitzpatrick said: 'Climate change affects everyone and everyone can make a contribution to tackling it.
'By choosing the car with the most efficient engine in its class, drivers could reduce their engine's carbon dioxide emissions by 24% and potentially save a quarter on fuel costs.'
Speaking at the launch of the new site, What Car? editor Steve Fowler said: 'These rankings are exactly what consumers need to make an informed choice about the type of car to buy in order to minimise their fuel consumption, save money and help tackle climate change.
'Car buyers are making increasingly difficult choices about cars they buy and these rankings will help them to include environmental factors when making that vital decision.'
