Big people-carriers all too often require big muscles to lift out chairs when you want to juggle seating arrangements – but not the Grand Voyager.

This is the first large MPV to offer seats that simply fold into the floor. It’s a clever idea, and one first seen on the smaller Vauxhall Zafira in 1999.

Chrysler’s Stow ’n’ Go system gives the Grand Voyager the edge over rivals and couldn’t be easier to use. All five rear seats simply fold flat into compartments under the floor, removing the need to fiddle with complicated hinges and catches.

With all the seats lowered, there’s a van-like 4690 litres of luggage space. Leave them upright and the under-floor compartments provide 340 litres of concealed stowage.

The Grand Voyager also depreciates more slowly than its rivals, and the 2.8 CRD diesel offers a competitive drive and a relatively frugal fuel consumption of 28.9mpg.

Anti-lock brakes, twin front airbags and side curtain airbags stretching the length of all three rows are a standard fit. Security is boosted by deadlocks, an alarm and remote central locking, while even this humble LX model comes with alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, a 10-speaker CD stereo and cruise control.
