This is one of the toughest categories in our 2005 awards. Last year’s winner, the VW Golf, was also our overall Car or the Year. Citroen, Ford and Vauxhall have brought new models to the class, and there have been improvements to the Toyota Corolla, another former Car of the Year.

All of this illustrates just how good our winner, the Skoda Octavia, is. This outstanding all-round package offers more than any rival. Buyers get more space and practicality, a great drive, an engine with willing performance and top-notch refinement.

Value for money is a key element of the Octavia’s appeal. Mid-spec Ambiente trim is competitive with rivals on price but ahead on equipment. It also makes sound financial sense. Its average fuel economy is just over 40mpg, while the Octavia holds its value better than most, retaining half its original price after three years.

A bargain it might be, but Skoda hasn’t cut any corners. The Octavia is a match for its VW Golf cousin for quality, with a superb finish and classy materials throughout.
