What Car? guide to car supermarkets - Eddie Wright, Scunthorpe

18 September 2006
CHOICE
Eddie Wright stocks mostly older cars: the newest examples were on 05-plates. Mainstream brands make up the majority of cars, but there were also BMWs and Subaru Imprezas on show. Unlike many car supermarkets, though, there very few new-shape Ford Focuses.

PRICES
The prices were an average of 1% over those in trade guides, but some cars looked over-priced.

DID IT HAVE THE CARS WE SAW ONLINE?
Because some of the cars didn't have details displayed in them, we found if difficult to track down the cars we'd seen on the internet without the help of a salesman.

HIDDEN CHARGES
Road vehicle tax was the only payable extra.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THINGS GO WRONG?
All cars get a thorough inspection and a service, if they need one, before they are sold. Each car comes with at least three months' warranty if the manufacturer's cover has expired, and you can pay for extended cover.

FINANCE
Eddie Wright had a range of finance options available including HP, PCP and, in some cases, 0% deals via Black Horse. The typical APR rate was advertised at 7.9%.

PART-EXCHANGE
It took a while to convince the sales team to give us a part-exchange price, but after a good look at the Mondeo they offered a generous £6250.

TEST DRIVE
Eddie Wright were a little reluctant to let us out for a test drive, but did agree. The local roads provided a good mix of environments, but the garage told us that they prefer you to book a test drive in advance.

CONDITION
The cars looked clean, tidy and in good order. The cleaners were in action during our visit, but some vehicles could have been cleaner on the outside.

CUSTOMER SERVICE
Things looked good when we first arrived, but when we weren't offered any help we had to venture into the second larger showroom where salesman Adam introduced himself. He made a good effort to qualify the type of car we were looking for and point us in the right direction, although his knowledge of the cars in stock was limited.

Overall, though, the whole experience was relaxed and friendly, and we felt as if we'd been looked after. An enjoyable experience.

VERDICT
A good-looking supermarket with plenty of cars, but the prices could do with being more competitive.
