What Car? guide to car supermarkets - Fords of Winsford, Winsford

18 September 2006
CHOICE
Fords probably had the widest choice of cars of any supermarket we visited. Most cars we could think of were here. It even had models such as the Porsche Boxster – not your usual supermarket fare. Most of the stock ranges from '03/03-plate cars to '05/55, but there were older cars on site. We also found some new imported Renaults.

PRICES
Prices at Fords were low: on average 7% below those in trade guides.

DID IT HAVE THE CARS WE SAW ONLINE?
We easily found the cars we'd seen on the website thanks to the helpful stock list.

HIDDEN CHARGES
The only extra charge you'd pay on top of the sticker price is road tax.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THINGS GO WRONG?
All cars get at least a month's warranty if there is no manufacturer's warranty left. Extended cover is £299 for a year.

FINANCE
Fords had no problem giving us a quote on the day, at a competitive APR of roughly 9%.

PART-EXCHANGE
The Mondeo had a very thorough assessment and we were offered a middling £4950.

TEST DRIVE
Having a test drive in our chosen Ford Focus was not a problem, and once a set of trade plates were in place we headed out onto local A- and B-roads for 15 minutes. This gave us a good impression of how the car performed.

CONDITION
All cars looked clean and well presented inside and out, with no obvious marks or defects.

CUSTOMER SERVICE
We arrived at Fords early, but the site was already organised and open for business. Once we'd got a stock list, it was easy to find the cars we were interested in. When ready to speak to a salesman, we simply gave our details to reception and were given a numbered ticket. After only four minutes, salesman Tony came and looked after us. He made sure we found the cars of interest, even including the ones not on display yet, arranged a test drive and produced a finance deal.

All in all we were given an excellent level of customer service and were not pressured at any point. Some other car supermarkets should study Fords' organisation — it was hard to find fault with anything.

Verdict
Excellent customer service and low prices make Fords of Winsford a must-visit supermarket.
