What Car? guide to car supermarkets - Motorpoint, Glasgow

18 September 2006
CHOICE
With 600 cars on site, there's enough choice to satisfy most shoppers. Mainstream brands make up the bulk of the cars, but prestige marques are also well represented, including BMWs and Mercedes. We didn't see anything older than a 2004 car.

PRICES
Prices matched those in the trade guides for the big sellers, but the prestige cars weren't always such good value. New BMW and Mercedes were between 2% and 4% higher than the What Car? Target Price.

DID IT HAVE THE CARS WE SAW ONLINE?
We were quickly able to find the cars shown on the Motorpoint website, including new, used and pre-registered examples.

HIDDEN CHARGES
Road tax is not included. A valet and pre-sales inspection cost an extra £62.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THINGS GO WRONG?
All cars come with a minimum of three months' warranty if there is no manufacturer's cover left. You can buy extended cover – a year's worth costs £299 and two years' cover costs £499.

FINANCE
Motorpoint was happy to give us a finance quote based on our requirements. A question about the interest rate prompted the business manager to reduce the APR to just under 11%, which is still more than the typical rate.

PART-EXCHANGE
We were bid a good £6600 for the Mondeo, valid for four weeks.

TEST DRIVE
Our salesman insisted we take a test drive in the Focus that had caught our eye. The route lasted about 15 minutes and took in a good variety of road types.

CONDITION
With the exception of some bird droppings on the bodywork, all the cars looked perfectly clean inside and out.

CUSTOMER SERVICE
Visiting Motorpoint was a relaxing and pleasant experience. The staff were friendly and happy to help us after we'd roamed the forecourt.

Salesman Brian quickly introduced himself and handed us the keys to the car we were interested in, so we could have a look inside before we went on a test drive. At no point did we feel rushed or made to feel as if our business was not important to them.

The only downside came when we spotted the microphones in the sale booth to record conversations for training purposes — a bit too Big Brother.

VERDICT
Lots of cars, a relaxed atmosphere and attractive finance and part-ex quotes, but prices could be lower.
