What Car? guide to portable sat-nav - Medion GoPal 515

24 November 2006
Cost £350
For A lot of bang for your bucks
Against Doesn't clear previously entered content
Verdict Lots of functions but can be a little unwieldy

The Medion offers plenty of kit for the money, with an MP3 player, Bluetooth functionality for hands-free phone calls, and the facility to store photos on the memory card.

Entering the destination wasn't intuitive enough, and when you opt to enter a new address the screen doesn't clear previously entered content, which can be confusing. A stylus is provided to help hit the right keys, although we managed to lose this during the course of our test run. Our favourite feature was the variety of Points of Interest along the way, down to which brand of petrol station you are approaching.

At one point we were requested to 'observe speed limits' and it recalculated our route after a diversion, but we had to wait a while for it to do so.

The GoPal comes with a smart carry case, and an option to personalise it with a different snap-on cover.
