What Car? guide to... towing - Engine power

14 April 2008
As well as checking that the weight of your car and trailer are safe and legal, you'll want to be sure your car's engine has enough power to let you tow a caravan or trailer with confidence.

A rough guide is to allow about 40bhp for every 1000kg of your outfit's train weight. You'll want as much pulling power as possible at low revs, with a good spread available through the rev-range.
