What Car? Q&A - Are tinted windows legal?

21 October 2005
Q: What is the law regarding tinted window on cars? I see lots of cars with different levels of tint, are they all legal?
David Craig

A: There are rules regarding the level of window tinting that can be applied to a car. For vehicles first used after March 30, 1985, the front windscreen and side front windows must allow at least 70% of any light to be transmitted through the glass. The rear side and back windows can be tinted to any level.

If you have a car with excessively tinted windows it should not be driven, because your insurance will probably be invalid. It is also an offence to try and sell a vehicle with excessively tinted windows
