What Car? Q&A - Are xenon headlights worth the extra?

23 June 2005
I am buying a new VW Golf in September. Should I go with the standard headlights or fit the optional xenon lamps instead? With headlight washers and automatic height adjustment, this costs £725. Do you think it’s beneficial and worth the money?

A: It really depends on how you’re going to use the car. If you do a lot of driving at night then you could benefit from the greater visibility provided by xenon headlights.

Because xenon headlights are much brighter than standard ones, it is a legal requirement for them to be self-levelling.

Headlight washers can be useful to remove grime, but the occasional clean the headlights get when you wash your car should usually be enough.
