Q: A friend tells me that drivers under the age of 21 can only accumulate six points on their licence before being banned. Is this true?
Emily DunsterA: Since June 1997, new drivers have had to retake their driving test if they receive six penalty points within two years of passing their test. This rule is regardless of age. A driver in this position would have to apply for a provisional licence, use L-plates, and obey all other restrictions for learner drivers until he or she has re-taken the test. Any driver over 21 years old who collects 12 penalty points within three years, faces an automatic ban.
