What Car? Q&A - Can I get a seat belt for my dog?

09 June 2005
Q: My dog travels in the car with me regularly and although he’s well behaved, I’m concerned about him being injured in the event of an accident. Can I buy a dog seatbelt and if so, from where?

A: It’s not just your dog that could be injured in an accident. If unrestrained, he can act like a missile during a crash and could cause serious injury to anyone else in the car. It is therefore wise, and in some countries law, to prevent your dog from moving around freely in the car.

You can buy dog harnesses from most pet shops from about £14, they fit around the dog and thread through the car’ seatbelt to keep your pet secure. There are also dog guards and travel crates on the market, but their use depends on the type of car you have and the size of your dog.
