What Car? Q&A - Can I teach my friends to drive?

06 October 2005
Q: I’ve just passed my driving test, and have several friends who want to learn to drive. However, I’ve been told that I need to be over 21-years old before I can teach someone. Is this true?
Toby Green

A: You are half correct. You do need to be over 21 in order to teach someone to drive, but you will also need to have held a full UK driving licence for at least three years.

It is important to remember that when you do undertake to teach a learner driver, you are responsible for their actions, and it is up to you to take all reasonable measures to ensure that their driving does not endanger others. Failure to do so could result in prosecution.

However, just because a learner is inexperienced, it does not excuse them from negligent driving. If their actions cause an accident both the learner and the teacher could be liable.
