Q: A friend gave me a ticking off recently for driving with my front foglights on. I think it makes me more visible and helps light the road at night, but have been told it’s illegal. Is this true?
Jessica SuttonA: You should never use your foglights when there's no fog - and you risk a penalty fine of £30 if you do.
According to Rule 114 of The Highway Code, ‘you must not use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced.’
You might think switching them on makes you more visible, but in conditions of good visibility you could actually end up causing an accident by dazzling the driver of an oncoming vehicle.
