What Car? Q&A - Can you get a seatbelt for a dog?

02 November 2007
Q: I have an Audi A4 estate, and regularly use it to transport my dog. He goes in the boot, but often stands up and gets thrown around when I go round corners or need to brake suddenly. What would happen to him if I had an accident? Why don't companies make seatbelts for dogs?
Jenny Beckett

A: There are a few companies offering safety restraint systems for dogs.

Orvis UK (www.orvis.co.uk) offers a dog seatbelt harness in several sizes. Your dog would have to sit on the back seat, but the system works with a car's seatbelt system and prevents the dog being thrown around the car in the event of an accident. Prices start at £19.99.

Doggie Solutions (www.doggiesolutions.co.uk) also offers a seatbelt for dogs. The Softex Car Safety Harness costs from £11.99 and works in a similar way to the Orvis system.
