Q: I am a disabled driver but haven’t driven for nearly two years. Is there an assessment I can have for my driving ability now?
Louise DeaneA: There are independent assessment centres up and down the UK where experts can assess your driving abilities and identify any equipment or adaptations that may be required. Most centres will also be able to give you an idea of any costs involved (such as for adapting your existing car or buying a new one). They should also be able to advise you on driving courses for disabled people, should you wish to brush up your skills.
The independent assessment centres include the Queen Elizabeth Foundation Mobility Centre, Surrey (01372 841100), The Regional Driving Assessment Centre, Birmingham (0121 627 8228) and the Mobility Service of the Disabled Living Centre, Bristol (0117 965 9353). Information on general mobility issues is available from the Mobility Advice and Vehicle Information Service (MAVIS), Berkshire (01344 661000). Details of local assessment centres are also available from the Disabled Drivers Association (01508 489449) and the Disabled Drivers Motor Club (01832 734724).
