What Car? Q&A - Does my car have a timing chain or a bel

15 March 2007
Q: I own a 2002 Ford Mondeo 1.8 Zetec and am unsure whether it has a timing chain or cambelt. The manual suggests it has a cambelt that requires changing every five years or 80,000 miles, while my dealer insists that it has a chain that does not need replacing. I've heard that if a cambelt snaps it can be very expensive to repair, so I'm hoping that you can clarify who is correct?

A: Cambelt failure can cause very serious engine damage, often resulting in the need to completely rebuild your engine. Fortunately, your Mondeo is fitted with a timing chain, which is much more reliable.

Ford does not stipulate any specific maintenance for the chains, however if you experience a metallic rattling noise, take it straight to a specialist for inspection.

Whether you own a car with a timing belt or a timing chain, it is essential that neither is ever neglected, and the best way to do this is to ensure your car is serviced regularly at the prescribed intervals.
