What Car? Q&A - Explain self-levelling suspension

09 February 2006
Q: I've just bought a new BMW 5 Series Touring which is fitted with self-levelling suspension. How does this work and what are the advantages?
Paul Bradley

A: Your 5 Series uses a pneumatic self-levelling system, which automatically feeds compressed air to the rear suspension to compensate for any extra weight in the back and to keep the car level.

Manufacturers opt for self-levelling suspension systems because they help maintain good handling and road-holding, irrespective of any weight that may be in the car.
