What Car? Q&A - Extra seatbelt in a convertible?

06 October 2005
Q: My husband and I are looking to buy a Vauxhall Astra convertible, but we have three children and Vauxhall doesn’t offer a rear centre seatbelt. How can I get one installed?
Helen Marks

A: Although the Astra hatchback comes with a middle rear seat belt, the convertible version does not. It might be possible to fit an extra seatbelt, but this is not necessarily the best course of action.

All the safety testing for the convertible has been carried out with four occupants, not five. Installing an extra belt may well invalidate your warranty, and if you do have one fitted, you will need to inform your insurance company.

All in all we'd strongly advise you not to go down this route.
