Q: My 18-year-old Peugeot 205 has come to the end of its life, and I need to arrange for it to be scrapped. It doesn't have an MoT certificate or insurance, which means I can't drive it to a scrapyard. So, how should I go about this?
Alan BakerA: You need to give the Environment Agency a call (0870 8506 506) or visit its website (www.environment-agency.gov.uk).
It will be able to put you in touch with your nearest authorised treatment facility, which should be able to arrange for your car to be collected. Expect to pay for this service, though.
There are 1008 such facilities in the UK, and all will be able to issue you with a Certificate of Destruction to prove you have disposed of your Peugeot in the correct manner.
Nowadays, under the End of Life Vehicle regulations, 85% of car waste has to be stripped and processed. Many parts are refurbished and reused, but some (such as the bodywork) are recycled.
