What Car? Q&A - How does self-levelling suspension work?

30 June 2005
Q: I’ve just bought a new BMW 5 Series Touring, which is fitted with self-levelling suspension. How does this work and what are the advantages?
Paul Bradley

A: Your 5 Series uses a pneumatic self-levelling system, which automatically feeds compressed air to the rear suspension to compensate for the weight of any load carried in the back to ensure that it’s level. Manufacturers opt for self-levelling suspension because it helps to maintain good handling and roadholding despite any weight that may be in the car.
