What Car? Q&A - How frugal is the new Smart Fortwo?

02 November 2007
Q: Can you give me a rough idea of the miles per litre I could expect from a new Smart Fortwo? I appreciate it depends on the engine, but an approximate figure would be helpful.
Liz

A: The new Smart Fortwo should average between 57.7 and 60.1 miles per gallon, depending on which power output you opt for. That works out at between 12.7 and 13.2 miles for every litre of petrol.

The exact number of miles you get from every litre will depend on your driving, though. If most of your trips are in and around town, it's likely that figure will drop slightly.

On the other hand, if most of your driving is on motorways and A-roads, you'll probably eke out a few more miles from every litre.

While the Fortwo is very economical, some small cars use even less fuel. The Citroen C2 1.0i, for instance, averages a mightily impressive 61.4mpg - that's 13.5 miles per litre

The Volkswagen Polo Bluemotion 1 takes the award for the most frugal supermini, though - it should return a whopping 74.3mpg (16.3 miles per litre).
