What Car? Q&A - How should I replace my Porsche?

02 June 2005
Q: Due to financial reasons, I have had to sell my pride and joy, a Porsche 911. I’ve decided to buy my wife a fun second-hand convertible with some of the money. What sort of cars do you think would fit the bill for about £20,000?
Elliott Jarvis

A: The most obvious answer would be to consider a Porsche Boxster, that way you could retain some of the performance and panache of the car you’re having to sell.

Your budget should be enough to get you into a 2000 W-plate Boxster from a dealer, with a 2.7-litre engine and 50,000 miles on the clock.

If you don’t fancy another Porsche, consider a Honda S2000 – a 03- or 52-plate with 22,000 miles. You might even be able to scrape together enough for an early 2.2-litre BMW Z4, if you can find someone willing to part with one.

Wait until this autumn and you could even have a brand-new MX-5 and have money left over. If you can’t wait that long, you could buy a new Toyota MR2 instead.
