What Car? Q&A - Is a Vauxhall Omega a good towcar?

01 June 2006
Q: I am thinking of buying a Vauxhall Omega 2.5 V6 saloon auto to tow my caravan. Do they make a wise used buy?
C. Stebbings

A: The 2.6 V6 is a pretty thirsty choice, with a combined fuel consumption of just 29.1mpg.

If you're towing a caravan, you'd get nowhere near this figure, so you might want to consider the 2.5 TD or 2.2DTi diesel versions instead. The 2.5 TD manages 36.2mpg, but the 2.2 has a better figure of 39.8mpg on the combined cycle.

Both also have significantly more torque than the petrol V6, too, so they should be better suited to the towing work you have in mind.

Overall, the Vauxhall Omega can be a great-value used buy, although axles and suspension are known trouble spots. The trim of the most recent Omega is more robust that the earlier version, but it is still prone to rattles.

Used values are comparatively low, so there is no need to locate a high-mileage example in search of a good price.
