What Car? Q&A - Is my car a classic?

22 September 2005
Q: When does a car become a classic and no longer require you to pay car tax? I have just bought a 1985 BMW 635Ci. Will this now be classed as a classic?
Simon Williams

A: Unfortunately, for tax purposes, your car is not deemed a classic. Only cars built before January 1 1973 fall into the 'historic vehicle tax' class and are exempt from VED.

As your car was registered after 1973 but before 2001, the tax is calculated on its engine size. Since 2001, all cars are taxed according to their respective carbon dioxide emissions.

As your BMW has an engine size over 1549cc, a year's tax currently costs £170, with six months' costing £93.50. Owners of vehicles built before 1973 are still required to obtain a 'nil' or free tax disc annually from their local DVLA. To locate your nearest office, call 0870 850 0007.
