What Car? Q&A - Is my car liable for C-Charge?

Q: When will the new Congestion Charge be introduced in London, and can you tell me if my car will be liable for the new £25 charge?

The car is a VW Touareg 3.0 V6 TDI, which is in tax Band G, but it was registered in 2005, which I believe is before Band G even existed.

A: Bad news, we're afraid. Although your Touareg was made before the introduction of band G, it will be classed as such because it was registered after February 31, 2001.

That means if the new Congestion Charge proposals are introduced, you will have to pay the £25-a-day fee.

Should Ken Livingstone be re-elected as Mayor of London in March 2008, we expect the new charges to be introduced shortly after.

It's also worth remembering that in March next year your car's tax bill will rise from £300 (as it is as present) to £400 a year.
