What Car? Q&A - Is my part-exchange a good deal?

Q: I am looking to buy a Land Rover Freelander 2.2 TD4 GS auto. My local dealers tell me the Freelander is selling well, so discounts are small.

My part-exchange is a 54-plate Renault Modus 1.4 Expression with 15,000 miles on the clock, and they have offered me £3500 for it, as well as a 7% discount on the Freelander. Does this sound like a good deal?

A: The Freelander you're looking at comes with a list price of £24,830 in automatic guise (assuming you haven't specified any other extras).

A discount of 7% brings the price down to £23,092. Minus the £3500 you are being offered for your Modus, you'll end up paying £19,592.

So, the Freelander sounds like a good deal - it's £148 less than our Target Price. However, the money you are being offered for you Modus is far less than we'd expect.

Even as a part exchange, we reckon you should get £4945. So, overall you should end up paying no more than £18,295 - £1297 less than the dealers you've visited are offering.

Want to get a great deal? Advertise your Modus privately for £5145 (assuming it's in good nick). It should sell for at least £5000, even if the buyer knocks you down a bit on price.

Then buy the Freelander for £22,468 at Motorlogix.com. The overall cost to you of would be £17,648 - £1944 less than you're being offered at present.

We'd suggest you take these figures to your dealer and see what he can do.
