Q: I have just ordered a new Honda, and the dealer advised us to go for GardX paint protection. I just wondered what your thoughts and experiences are with this system, and if it is worth buying.
Jason PopeA: GardX is a transparent layer of protection etched into the car's paintwork.
There's no doubt that the dealer will be making a good profit on it, but it can be worth it.
It will add an extra layer of protection against atmospheric agents and UV light, which can dull the bodywork over time, especially red paint.
It also protects against organic matter, such as tree sap or bird droppings. Damage caused by any of these agents is often excluded from warranties.
So, if you notice a lot of sap or droppings on your car because of the area you live in or where you park, it might be worth fitting paint protection.
If you do choose GardX, ask for a certificate confirming the work has been carried out, and keep any guarantee that might be offered with the coating.
It's also worth trying to haggle with the dealer for GardX to be included in the price of your new car.
