What Car? Q&A - Is Smart Forfour front-wheel drive?

28 September 2007
Q: Is the Smart Forfour 1.5 petrol (54 plate) front- or rear-wheel drive, and is it still being made? I can't find in listed in the 'new car' section of your website.

A: The reason the car is no longer listed in the new car section of whatcar.com is because, as you suspected, it's no longer made. The Forfour was front-wheel drive, unlike its smaller brother, the Fortwo, which is rear-wheel drive.

There are plenty Forfours around on the used market, though, if you've got your heart set on one.

The Forfour was largely based on the Mitsubishi Colt, and shares its chassis, suspension and petrol engines.

So, if you've driven the Forfour and liked it, chances are you'll also get on well with the Colt.

The Colt is better value for money as a new car, too - the Smart 1.5-litre petrol started at around £11,000 when new, whereas a new Mitsubishi Colt will cost you £500 less than that today, even before you start haggling.

A bit of negotiating should get the price down to our Target Price of £9840.
