What Car? Q&A - Is there a new Mini due in 2006?

24 February 2006
Q: I am thinking of buying a new Mini Cooper. However, I seem to remember reading that there will be a new Mini released in 2006. Is this true?
Nick Morgan

A: Yes, the new Mini is due to be released late this year or early next year. It won't look hugely different from the current model, but its front end has a slightly grander, more upright look to it.

However, it will have an all-new engine, built by BMW. The 1.6-litre unit will deliver 115bhp in the Mini One, while turbocharged Cooper and Cooper S models will have 143bhp and 170bhp respectively.

You may be tempted to wait for the new model. Alternatively, you may be able to pick up a current-style Mini closer the time at a good price, as dealers prepare to make way for the new stock.

Residual values for the Mini have traditionally been extremely strong, but you should still remember that the arrival of the new-look model could affect the long-term value of your car if you do choose to buy one before the new model is released.
