What Car? Q&A - Isn't it the law to carry a spare wheel?

23 February 2007
Q: Can you tell me why the Vauxhall Zafira is being sold without a spare wheel as standard? Surely this is against the law?
Roger Riggott

A: Spare wheels add weight and take up space. This is why Vauxhall is just one of many manufacturers that have chosen to do away with a spare wheel and replace it with a can of tyre sealant or a space-saver spare.

Both of these systems are merely temporary fixes, designed to get you to a tyre-fitter or home at reduced speed.

These is no legal requirement to carry a spare wheel, but if you do, it must comply with tyre laws on wear and condition.
