What Car? Q&A - Mazda 3 or Golf Plus?

24 November 2005
Q: I am going to acquire a new car through the Motability scheme, and I have a choice of a Mazda 3 or Volkswagen Golf Plus. Which would you recommend?
Dave Jones

A: While the Mazda 3 and Volkswagen Golf Plus are both from the small family car sector, the Golf Plus is significantly more spacious and better equipped. However this does come at a cost.

The 3's price starts at £10,800, while the Golf Plus begins at £12,895. In terms of the Motability scheme, the Golf Plus could ultimately mean slightly higher monthly payments. However, this is dependent on the model you choose and the financial assistance you receive from the Motability scheme.

The Mazda 3 has sound underpinnings, as it is based on the accomplished Ford Focus platform. Basic S trim does without air-conditioning, CD player and stability control. A £2100 premium for the Golf Plus gives you all this as standard.

The Mazda 3 has been praised for its spacious cabin, although the Golf Plus is specifically designed with a far higher roofline, and consequently the headroom is generous, and may make access easier.

Which one is right for you will depend almost solely on how it meets your specific requirements. Motability advises you to take an extended test drive through a Motability-accredited dealership.

Additionally, if you are a wheelchair user, be sure to take it along for the test drive. It is also advisable to liaise closely with the Motability specialist throughout the process of acquiring your vehicle.
