Q: I've just ordered a new VW Golf and have been offered Superguard paint protection. Is it worthwhile having a car treated with this product or is it just another way for dealers to add to the cost?
Emma ParkesA: Superguard is a transparent layer applied on top of the car’ paintwork.
There’s no doubt that it’s an added cost that a dealer will be making a good profit on (we’ve seen it sold for as much as £375), but it can be worth it.
It will add an extra layer of protection against atmospheric agents, such as UV light, which can over time dull the bodywork, especially red paint. It also protects against organic matter, such as tree sap or bird droppings. Damage caused by any of these agents is often excluded from warranties.
So, if you notice a lot of sap or droppings on your car because of the area you live in or where you park, it might be worth fitting paint protection.
If you choose Superguard, ask for a certificate confirming the work has in fact been carried out, and keep any guarantee that might be offered with the coating.
It’s worth trying to haggle with the dealer for coating to be included in the price of your new car. Unfortunately, it sounds as if you’ve already agreed on a price, in which case it will be impossible on this occasion.
