What Car? Q&A - Should I wait for new Mini?

08 December 2005
Q: I am about to order a new Mini Cooper S, and have just found out that a new version is to be launched in 2006. Should I wait?

A: Mini is not revealing many details about the new car, including the launch date. It's possible that the new range could arrive late in 2006 – however, it might not break cover until 2007.

There is also likely to be a delay between the hatchback and the convertible going on sale, and there is almost certainly going to be a new estate version as well, probably using the Traveller name.

The car is to feature a completely new engine range, with new motors developed by PSA Peugeot-Citroen, and they should improve an already accomplished car.

The new engines might not offer more power than the current models, but they are expected to feel more refined. The new models should also benefit from significantly better fuel economy and emissions. On the Coopers S models, a turbocharger will be employed instead of the current supercharger.

Inside, it is rumoured that there will be improved use of space, with better head and leg room, and a bigger boot. Despite these claims, however, the exterior dimensions are likely to remain very similar to the current car.
