What Car? Q&A - Toyota's new MR2?

14 July 2005
Q: Do you know if Toyota has any plans to replace its MR2 model and, if so, what the replacement will be like and when it will appear?
Matthew Harding

A: Production of the current MR2 and the Celica coupe will finish at the end of this year.

The cars will remain available for a little time into 2006, but Toyota says it has no immediate plans to replace either.

It says it wants to concentrate on building sales volumes with more mass-market models, and has a European target of 1.2 million a year by 2010. The company was also having difficulty getting the models to meet new exhaust emissions standards.

While sports cars haven’t been ruled out for good, Toyota says there won’t be any developments in the near future.
