What Car? Q&A - What are 'baby on board' stickers for?

02 March 2007
Q: Why do drivers put 'child on board' stickers in the back of their car? Do they think it will make other drivers more careful, or is it to excuse their own erratic driving?
John Donaldson

A: Originally these signs were intended to assist the emergency services in the event of an accident, and would encourage them to look outside the car for a missing infant.

However, this is only useful if the sign is removed when the child is not inside the car, otherwise it risks wasting the time of the emergency services. Making sure a child is securely fastened in a properly fitted child seat is the best way to ensure its safety.

Any signs that are placed on the rear windscreen or side windows can create a dangerous blind spot, making it harder for the driver to spot a cyclist or motorbike.
