What Car? Q&A - What are those roadworks on the M1?

01 June 2006
Q: I was driving on the M1 last week and was caught in slow-moving traffic for a long time; it looked like resurfacing work. Can you tell me any more?
David Cartilage

A: The M1 is currently undergoing a programme of work at areas in the east of England, the Midlands and Yorkshire.

The slow-moving traffic you came across between junction 6A and junction 10 is because of widening work, not resurfacing. The work should reduce congestion and journey times and increase safety once finished. It is scheduled for completion in autumn 2008.

Reduced speed limits have been put in place and are being enforced by cameras that calculate average speed between two points.
