What Car? Q&A - What car can I get for £2000?

Friday, July 06, 2007
Q: I need to buy a used car for a short while to replace my Motability Ford Focus.

Unfortunately I can only afford to spend up to £2000.

I have two dogs, so I need something suitable to carry them. It needs to be economical to run, and an automatic would be nice. I'm less worried about style and more concerned with practicality.

A: Given your budget, the Nissan Almera would be the ideal car. There are loads for sale, and they have an excellent record for reliability.

You should be able to get a 1998 R-plate 1.6 GX 5dr model. It's a hatchback so getting the dogs in or out won't be a problem.

There are Almeras out there with 50,000 miles or less, and you should be able to find an automatic version for the same price if you shop around.

Private sales will offer the best value, but don't rule out cars at smaller independent garages.
