What Car? Q&A - What Car?

11 August 2005
Q: Can you suggest a new car for my daughter? She is 18 years old and looking for a hatchback that rates highly but also doesn’t cost a fortune to insure.
Roger Bartrim

A: When it comes to picking a small, attractively priced hatchback for a young driver, there are plenty of cars to choose from. Cars to consider include the Fiat Panda, Skoda Fabia and Vauxhall Corsa. All of these have models in insurance group one, and so should be cheaper for young drivers. The Citroen C2 also has a What Car? Target Price of only £5766, as well as being in the lowest insurance class.

However, there are two cars we consider to be the best value for money, as well as cheap to insure. The Daihatsu Sirion 1.0 S 5dr has a list price of £6995, but a What Car? Target Price of £6496, and sits in group four. The Kia Picanto 1.0 GS 5dr, with a list price of £5995 and a Target Price of £5725, sits in group one. Both cars provide lots of equipment and low running costs, and should prove easy to insure for a younger driver.
