What Car? Q&A - What's exempt from congestion charge?

09 September 2005
Q: I'm trying everywhere to get a list of alternatively fuelled cars that are exempt from London's Congestion Charge. I know nine-seaters are exempt.
Jo Wong

A: The petrol-electric Toyota Prius and Honda Civic IMA hybrids are eligible for a 100% reduction in the charge.

So too are dual-fuel cars that run on liquefied petroleum gas or compressed natural gas and petrol. These can be bi-fuel models, factory-built (currently Vauxhall is the only manufacturer to do this) or those converted after purchase.

They have to meet certain emissions standards to win the exemption, however. For a full list of which models qualify, visit the Government's Transport Energy PowerShift register here.
