What Car? Q&A - What's the average discount at a dealer?

21 July 2005
Q: If I go to a dealer looking to buy a car with a cost of about £10,000 to £11,000, what approximate amount should I expect to knock off? I know that all dealers aren't the same but does £1500-£2000 make sense for example? I would appreciate a rough guideline.

A: What Car?’s Target Price does better than giving a rule-of-thumb discount by spelling out exactly how much you should expect to save on any new car on sale.

With big variations in discounts between makes and models it wouldn't make sense to quote one overall figure. Discounts on cars in your price bracket, for instance, vary from 4% on a Honda Jazz to 25% on a Citroen C3.

That's why What Car?'s team of mystery shoppers is constantly at work researching the discounts that are available on specific models so you don't have to worry about whether you're paying over the odds or not.

You can find the Target Price for the cars you're looking at online at Whatcar.com now or in the back of the magazine each month.
