What Car? Q&A - What's the longest car for my garage?

12 October 2007
Q: I want to buy a new saloon car, but it must be able to fit in my garage. That means it can't be any longer than 4.5 metres. My budget is £22,000.

A: The dimensions of any new car can be found in the new car section of whatcar.com.

Just pick a make and model from the drop-down menu, choose the trim you're interested in at the bottom of the page, then click on the 'Performance & Measurements' link. Scroll down to find the length in millimetres of your chosen car.

There aren't many new saloons shorter than 4.5 metres, so you won't be spoilt for choice.

The Volvo S40 is one option, though. It measures just 4476mm, and you could afford a top-of-the-range version (like the D5 SE or the 2.4 SE Lux).

At 4488mm, the Ford Focus saloon would also squeeze in your garage. It might not be quite what you had in mind, but it would save you a lot of cash, whichever model you went for.

If you can move any items in your garage to create another 2cm of space, our Compact Executive of the Year, the BMW 3 Series saloon, would also fit. With a budget of £22,000 and a bit of haggling, you could afford the 318d ES.
