What Car? Q&A - What small 4x4 should I buy?

09 June 2005
Q: For the past few years I’ve lived close to a river and several times the local roads have been flooded. I’d like to change my small hatch for a new 4x4, but my budget is just £10,000. What would you recommend?
Derek Braze

A: The choice of new off-roaders for £10,000 is very limited. Both the Daihatsu Terios E and Suzuki Jimny JLX Soft Top three-door meet the budget. However, if you’re used to driving a modern hatchback you may find both crude to drive and rather cramped.

Although the Fiat Panda 4x4 is better at £9195, and capable off-road, it will probably still be too low for your requirements.

If you consider buying used rather than new, some far more capable models will be within reach. You should be able to find a decent Toyota RAV4 for close to £10,000. Look for 52-plated cars from 2002 with around 32,000 miles on the clock. Dealers ought to have cars at this price, or you could save some cash by looking through private ads.
