What Car? Q&A - What will cope with twins and ladders?

13 October 2005
Q: My partner and I are expecting twins in January. At present we have a Peugeot Partner van, which needs to go. My partner runs his own business, part of which is aerial and satellite installation. He therefore needs enough roof space for a set of long ladders. We are completely stumped about what to buy – he doesn’t really want an estate car and we can’t really afford to spend loads on a new car. Any suggestions?

A: How about a Peugeot Partner Combi, or its sister car, the Citroen Berlingo Multispace? They are based on the Partner and Berlingo vans, so will have enough roof space for your husband’s ladders.

Both also have a second row of three seats, which will comfortably accommodate two child seats, while the boots are a good size for prams, changing bags and toys (and aerial installation equipment). Both models are also well priced, comfortable and refined.

The What Car? Target Price shows the Peugeot is the more expensive of the two with prices starting at about £8665 for the 1.4-litre petrol. The Citroen equivalent starts at £7578.

Other van-derived budget MPVs that might suit include the Fiat Doblo or the Renault Kangoo. Pay from £8560 for the Fiat or £8980 for the Renault.
