What Car? Q&A - Where and when should I buy a Corsa?

03 August 2006
Q: I am currently searching the market for a small diesel car with a maximum budget of £7000-£8000. I'm aware of the autumn release of the new Vauxhall Corsa, so I was wondering if you had any advice about considering a new, current-model 1.3-litre CDTi.

Should there be any significant discounts on the model, and if so, how much? Where would be the best place to buy, and when is the best time to go searching for a good deal?
Adam Twose, by email

A: You are right to think that there might be discounts on the outgoing model as dealers look to clear room on the forecourt for the new car.

Currently our Target Price indicates that you should get between 5-12% off if you haggle, so don't settle for less. Dealers may try to tempt buyers with free extras in place of further discounts.

Main dealers are your best bet for new unregistered cars, while car supermarkets could be a good source of low mileage or pre-reg examples.

The new model is available from October, so discounts should be greatest around the end of September, which is also the end of a sales quarter.

Bear in mind that as time goes on the availability of stock will decrease, so it might be harder to find the exact model you're after.

Currently, you can pick up a 1.3 Expression three-door for a Target Price of £7925, but keep checking whatcar.com closer to the time you buy.
