What Car? Q&A - Where can I buy insurance online?

15 September 2005
Q: Due to the increasing cost of petrol, I am considering buying a Toyota Prius. Unfortunately, I have been unable to get an online insurance quote for it. Would you please advise of any websites where I can get a quote?

A: For a start, you can get an indicative idea of how much any car will cost to cover by looking at its review online at Whatcar.com. The Prius is in group seven, which means a typical price of £345 a year.

How much you will pay will vary depending on how you differ from our typical quote for a 35-year-old living in Guildford, so you may pay more or, hopefully, less than this.

As with any purchasing decision, you'll need to shop around for the best price – and this is where it can pay dividends to log on to the internet.

Our favourite insurance shopping service is Confused.com – you should get a few sample quotes from here.

Don't forget that if you also arrange the cover online you could save up to 10%.
