Q: I am looking to buy a convertible car for my wife and would like a five-seater so that it will carry the whole family. Most are advertised as four-seaters, however. Do you know of any out there that offer a fifth seat option?
Andrew DeaconA: Unfortunately not. Convertibles are advertised as four-seaters and are legally allowed to carry just four passengers as they only have four seatbelts.
While you might be able to squeeze a fifth person in between the two rear seat passengers it would be illegal and dangerous to do so.
Even if you decide to leave one family member at home and go out as a foursome, a convertible is unlikely to provide you with the boot space you'll need either.
Sadly, wind-in-your-hair motoring and family-of-five practicality can’t really be combined in one car.
The closest you might get is opting for a car with a large panoramic-style sunroof. Plenty of manufacturers offer these on all sorts of models from superminis and small family cars to high-performance 4x4s and seven-seater MPVs. Try Audi, Citroen, Fiat, Ford, Mercedes, Renault, Porsche (the
Cayenne) or Vauxhall.
