What Car? Q&A - Which car can three surfers sleep in?

29 June 2006
Q: If you were a 5ft 7in 40-something woman who couldn't give up surfing but would like to give up sleeping on the cold ground, and you wanted to stick your surfboard on the roof and motor to north Devon every weekend and sleep in the back, would you choose a Fiat Doblo, Citroen Berlingo or Renault Kangoo as an affordable little home on wheels?

There would be two people sleeping in the back in case your answer relies on sleeping on a diagonal!

A: We last tested these cars against each other back in 2002, when the Citroen came out on top.

Our choice of the Berlingos, the 1.6 HDi 92bhp Forte model, has a What Car? Target Price of £9683. It's got the option of overhead lockers for some of your gear, and it's also a reasonable drive.

The Doblo could have the most room for you at night-time, but it's also the most expensive. Our favourite, the 105bhp 1.9-litre 16v MultiJet Active model, has a Target Price of just over £10,000.

The Kangoo might be the cheapest - a 1.5 dCi 84 Venture is yours for £9608, but it's also the smallest. It does come with overhead storage, but it might not be comfortable enough to sleep in.

You would be best to pay a visit to your local dealership to see just how comfortable you'll be sleeping in the back, even though the rear seats in all three fold to create a flat floor.

They're all okay to drive, but not amazing fun. Make sure you get your thrills on the waves.
