Q: I suffer from rheumatoid arthritis and am looking for a car with particular characteristics. It has to be easy to get in and out of, with a reasonably high seating position, soft suspension for comfort and an automatic gearbox. What cars can you suggest?
Diana LongA: You should always check with your doctor or specialist about the implications of driving if you suffer with rheumatoid arthritis. In some cases, it can affect your ability to control a car, or restrict your movement and use of mirrors.
There are a number of small cars with higher-than-average seating, but that alone is not the only criteria for selecting your perfect vehicle. Pedal position and steering wheel height and angle all affect how comfortable a car will be for you, and you'll need to spend as long as possible behind the wheel before you buy.
There are several cars you should consider that are available with automatic gearboxes. The
Ford Fusion is based on the popular
Fiesta but a little taller, while the Renault Modus is known for being comfortable. The Peugeot 1007 has very good access via its electric sliding doors and has a high seating position. However, its firm ride is not to everyone's taste.
You should also take a look at the
Fiat Panda, which is roomy and cheap to run, and the Suzuki Ignis, although you may find the ride too bouncy.
Most garages should be happy to offer you an extended test drive, so that you get a fair idea of what it will be like to use on a regular basis.
